Help with moving for asylum status holders
Did you come to the Netherlands as a refugee (asylum migrant)? And were you told after 31 December 2021 that you could stay (residence permit)? Then you are an asylum status holder. This page tells you how the municipality will help you with moving.
Moving from the asylum seekers’ centre to a place of your own
When you first arrive in the Netherlands, you live in a reception centre or asylum seekers’ centre (AZC). If you have permission to stay in the Netherlands, then the municipality will find housing for you. The Dutch Council for Refugees will help you start building your life in our community.

The municipality looks for housing for you, for example an apartment or a room. If the municipality has found a place that suits you, you will receive an invitation to go and view it.
Be aware that the municipality can only offer you housing one time. You must accept the place you are offered. If you want to move later, you will have to find a new flat or room yourself. The Dutch Council for Refugees can help you with this.
-
ou will take a look at the flat or room along with a representative from the Dutch Council for Refugees. You will also sign the rental contract. This is a document stating that you have rented the housing and how much you will pay to live there every month. There may also be other important arrangements in the contract.
Once you have signed the rental contract, you have a place of your own to live.
-
When you visit the housing offered to you, you meet a representative from the Dutch Council for Refugees. The Council will then also assign you a guidance counsellor. You will get to know your counsellor during an interview. Your counsellor will help you with any questions you have about your new life in our community. The goal is to for you to learn to take care of yourself as quickly as possible.
-
Once you have signed the rental contract, you must register with the municipality. That means that you inform the municipality that you live there and at which address. Your counsellor and your contact person at the municipality will help you with this. Once you are registered, you are officially a resident of our municipality. Congratulations!

You will receive money to buy furniture and other items for your new flat or room, like a table, a bed or curtains. This money is a loan from Kredietbank Limburg. That means that you will have to repay the money to the bank later. Read more about loans on the “Help with Money” page.
